Markhor

*Markhor

Markhor (Capra falconeri) is a large wild goat species that is native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Tajikistan . The name "Markhor" comes from the Persian word "Mar" meaning snake and "Khor" meaning eater, as it is known to hunt snakes.

Markhors are well-known for their impressive spiral horns, which can grow up to 5 feet in length in males and are used for defense and attracting mates. They are generally solitary animals, but may gather in small herds of up to 10 individuals during the winter months.

These goats are adapted to live in rocky, mountainous terrain and are able to climb steep cliffs and hillsides with ease. They are herbivores and primarily feed on grasses, leaves, and shrubs.

Markhors are listed as a near-threatened species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to habitat loss, hunting, and competition with domestic livestock. Conservation efforts are being made to protect these magnificent animals and their habits.
