Skardu is a town located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan. It is the capital of the Skardu District and is situated at an altitude of 2,438 meters (7,999 feet) above sea level. Skardu is surrounded by the Karakoram mountain range, which includes some of the world's highest peaks, such as K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. The town is also located near the confluence of the Indus and Shigar rivers, which provides opportunities for river rafting and fishing.

Skardu has a rich cultural heritage, with influences from Tibetan, Balti, and Kashmiri cultures. The local language is Balti, which is spoken by the majority of the population. Skardu is also home to several historical landmarks, including the Kharpocho Fort and the 700-year-old Shigar Fort, which have been restored and converted into museums.
